WINCHESTER, Va. –Six Middle East District employees participated in James Wood Middle School's annual Math and Science Olympics, April 23.

For the past several years, district professionals have spoken to JWMS sixth graders about what U.S. Army Corps of Engineers does within the Middle East and Central Asia, the importance of Math and Science in real-life situations, and what it takes to become an engineer.

For the second year in a row, the district team of executive assistant Ralph Hensley and civil engineers Andrea Hinkle, Wilhelmina Pierce, and Kevin Smyth have presented a slide show to the students. Afterwards, Sgt. Maj. Tom Jankiewicz and Maj. Matt Reagan demonstrated a satellite line of video communication with employees in the Iraq Area Office. They explained how this technique is used to communicate securely with downrange teammates. The employees in Iraq spoke to three groups of eager students, giving students a chance to ask questions of the engineers half-way across the world, as well as to those standing in the same room.

"I enjoy the opportunity to be a part of sparking the kids' interest in math and science," said Hinkle. "If we reach just one of those kids and pique his or her interest in math and/or science just a little, then we have accomplished an enormous amount just by participating."
