FY24 Student Intern Program (SIP)

- SIP Job announcements will likely open in September 2023 for the summer of 2024 internships (check back for more information). Recruiting for positions in the Fall will allow for a wider and more competitive candidate pool.

- Financial incentives such as Training/tuition funding as well as Advance in Hire incentives will be available

- All SIP job announcements will be posted on the CHRA Portal at (https://portal.chra.army.mil/afp )

- All SIP positions will be recruited at the GS-3 or GS-4 level

As a civilian member of the Middle East District, you will help the Corps of Engineers fulfill our nation’s engineering needs abroad. We design and build facilities for deployed U.S. forces, other U.S. government organizations, and friendly foreign defense agencies in the Middle East, Central Asia, and other areas. We have construction field offices in these areas and a contracting office in Kosovo.  Unpaid Internships

The Middle East District, part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, offers a unique learning experience for college students: working in the nation’s largest public engineering firm. We have professional, technical, administrative, and clerical positions, and offer numerous opportunities to gain valuable knowledge and experience through internships.

Students can be a true asset to our mission performance while simultaneously preparing for advancement in a chosen career field.

The Program:
• Students at colleges in the Winchester area may participate in unpaid internships with the Middle East District.
• The assigned internship will relate to the student’s field of study.
• Internships may be offered in all professional fields at the Middle East District but are currently focused on Contracting, Project Management, Resource Management, and Legal.
• Students will gain on-the-job experience to supplement their classroom instruction and may register for academic credit in accordance with their school’s policy.
• The Middle East District views the unpaid internship program as an important mechanism for introducing college students to federal employment in their areas of study.

How it Works:
• The Middle East District’s Internship Coordinator contacts colleges in the Winchester area to determine interest in participating and to identify students who would like to apply for an unpaid internship.
• The Middle East District provides information about the duties and types of work to be performed.
• College officials report student interest and assist them with submitting required paperwork, including a Volunteer Agreement, academic credit form, and the duration and duty hours of the assignment. Paperwork must be signed by the student, school official, and district representative.

 Pathways Internships    

Pathways Internships are paid internships. As part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee’s educational program requirements have been completed. You may be non-competitively converted, without a break in service, to a term (time-limited), career, or career-conditional (permanent) appointment in the Engineering or Architecture field, GS-08XX-5/7/9/11/12 career ladder position upon graduation and completion of program requirements but there is no guarantee. The grade level upon conversion will be determined by management.

The Department of the Army Pathways Interns may be converted to a permanent position within 120 days of successful completion of the program.
