    MED Continues Support to Balkans with USC II

    When President Bill Clinton ordered 20,000 U.S. troops to Bosnia-Herzegovina in December 1995, U.S. Army Europe turned to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide services through an existing contract managed by the Middle East District's predecessor. Soldiers received their life support – food, water, laundry and sanitation – and transportation and maintenance services through that contract, allowing them to focus on their peacekeeping mission.

    Middle East District participated in a career day event, held Nov. 16, at James Wood High School. Two District team members were among the 37 invited speakers and presenters from both private industry and government organizations.

    Lt. Col. Russell Sears, Middle East District Deputy Commander, served as keynote speaker during John Handley High School’s annual Veterans Day program Nov. 4.

    Middle East District Welcomes a New Commander

    Col. Jon L. Christen-sen took command of the U.S. Army’s engineering and construction agent in the Middle East and Central Asia re-gions during a ceremony Aug. 29 at the Cherry-Beasley Readiness Center here. Christensen follows Col. Ronald N. Light who led the Middle East District (MED) from July 2007 to July 2008 and again in August 2009, following a year in command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Gulf Region Divi-sion’s Central District (GRC) in Iraq.

    MED’s Hangar Fire Protection TCX is in demand

    MED is home to the Technical Center of Expertise (TCX) for Hangar Fire Protection that provides FPE assistance throughout the country and the world through design and construction of fire protection systems, and participation in acceptance tests for aircraft hangars. The TCX provides services to the Army Corps of Engineers, Air Force, Army, Air Reserve, and the Department of Homeland Security.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deployment Center (UDC) continues to grow and improve as it sets a high standard for deployment preparation and processing centers throughout the federal government.

    MED taking responsibility for Iraq projects

    The Middle East District (MED) will assume responsibility for Corps of Engineers construction programs for Department of State (DoS) and foreign military sales (FMS) customers in Iraq as the Gulf Region District (GRD) draws down during the next year.

    The Middle East District hosted 48 high school students and 10 counselors for a Day with an Engineer on March 23. The students, from 10 local area high schools, have expressed interest in engineering careers.

    Charrettes: Laying the foundation for project success

    The Army Corps of Engineers conducts charrettes as a standard practice for project planning and preparation, which sends teams comprised of personnel with specialized skills from various internal divisions to a proposed project site. What makes the Middle East District unique is that its charrettes occur in many of the 20 countries within the U.S. Central Command area of operations, far from the district’s Winchester, Va., headquarters.

    Pre-Proposal Conference held Feb. 18

    The Middle East District hosted a pre-proposal conference on Feb. 18 for two contracts that will provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services to the Afghanistan National Security Forces (ANSF). Thirty-nine contractors representing 28 international firms attended theconference.

    MED facilitating improvements at Sather Air Base

    The U.S. Air Force, Middle East District, Gulf Region District, and several stakeholders are collaborating to significantly improve airfield functionality and safety at Sather Air Base in Iraq.

    The new Shamali Detention Facility, located about 40 miles north of Kabul, Afghanistan, will soon replace the Bagram Theater Internment Facility (BTIF) and is considered the new standard for detention facilities in Central Asia and the Middle East.
