    Student shadows District engineers, determines his future path

    The Middle East District and Frederick County Public Schools collaborated on shadowing sessions so a local student could explore engineering careers. The program fits perfectly with the USACE commitment of teaming with others to strengthen programs that inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

    STEM shadowing experience successful for all

    The recently completed shadowing experience was reportedly a success from all perspectives. Middle East District engineers and architects shared time with a local high school student in one-hour increments throughout February, March, April and May. Most of the engineers and architects who spent time with the student seemed to appreciate the experience.

    PMs Forward work very closely with customers to manage their planning, programming, and design requirements, helping to guide the customer and recommend solutions on program development. For Afghanistan’s AIF program, Pat Brierly is the PM Forward in Afghanistan for the AIF Program working this temporary high water bridge on the right and low water temporary crossing on left. The new bridge location is in the center.

    PMs Forward enhance customer service, efficiency

    Strong relationships have sustained the Middle East District’s stability and longevity in the Middle East region. The District now employs another method to further enhance those relationships by assigning project managers overseas, referred to as project managers or PMs Forward, with our field staffs and customers.

    Back to the Community: District Represents Engineering at Local High School Career Fair

    According to the USACE STEM site, “The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recognizes the critical role that STEM education plays in enabling the U.S. to remain economic and technological leaders of the global marketplace and enabling the Departments of Defense and Army to keep our Nation secure. We are committed to teaming with others to strengthen STEM-related programs that inspire current and future generations of young people to pursue careers in STEM fields.”

    One of the UDC training rooms where more than 12,000 people began their deployments. Since May 2005, the UDC has been the first stop for thousands of deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Managed by and housed at the Middle East District headquarters in Winchester, Va., thousands of USACE civilians, Soldiers and contractors, along with thousands more from other federal agencies, have spent their first week away from their home stations at the UDC being trained and equipped for their new mission.

    USACE Deployment Center Closed as Part of Army-wide Consolidation

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deployment Center is officially closing its doors and ceasing operations.     Six members of the Qatar Emiri Corps of Engineers visited Winchester, Va., this week for discussions with Middle East District leadership. Topics focused on the District’s mission, products and services, and technical capabilities. The delegation is also touring Fort Lee, Va., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., before heading back to Qatar.

    CAMP GEIGER, N.C. - Lieutenant Gen. James F. Amos, commanding general, II Marine Expeditionary Force, shakes hands with Col. Bradford Washabaugh, commanding officers, School of Infantry (East), during his retirement ceremony July 8. Washabaugh's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy/Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia. He, his wife, Linda, and their two children, Brooke and Brandon, are currently in transit to Raleigh, N.C., where Washabaugh will begin his civilian career.

    District hosts local men's group, discusses overseas operations

    Ten members of Winchester’s First Presbyterian Men’s Group visited the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Middle East District headquarters on Sept. 25 to learn about the District’s overseas operations.

    Chief Warrant Officer 3 Darron Todd, maintenance officer with Marine Special Operations School, Marine Special Operations Command, fires a .410 shotgun at an airborne clay pigeon at the McIntyre Skeet Range aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, June 25. Todd, part of the All-Marine Skeet Team, is one of eight Marines who are scheduled to represent the Marine Corps and the United States in the upcoming 2010 World Skeet Shooting Championships this October.

    Family Readiness: Caring for families and employees, deployed or not

    Family Readiness Groups help families meet the challenges of military life and serve an important role for any military organization, including the Middle East District.

    District’s Traditional Foreign Military Sales Role Returning

    These programs are examples of the Middle East District's support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers international mission through the foreign military sales program. FMS had traditionally been the larger portion of the district's workload before the tragic events of 9/11 changed the world. The next decade brought a military construction focus to the district's work in the Middle East and Central Asia regions.

    USACE Participates in KazBuild Spring 2012 and Prime Contractor Meeting

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representatives participated in the KazBuild Spring 2012 Expo, a construction exhibition held March 14-16 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. USACE representatives included the Transatlantic Division's Senior Procurement Analyst Leigh Bandy and the Middle East District's Small Business Specialist Mike Weaver and Project Management Support for Others Branch Chief Bill Ryals.

  • Annual Award Winners Honored

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Middle East District held its Annual Awards Ceremony for fiscal year 2011 on Feb. 16. Commander Col. Jon Christensen presided over the event and presented the awards.

    Team Member Represents Professional Women on Panel at North Carolina State University

    Middle East District Mechanical Engineer Wilhelmina Pierce returned to North Carolina State University, her alma mater, in Raleigh, N.C., for their 7th Annual Professional Women in the Workplace Symposium, Feb. 9. The goal of the symposium was to share professional experiences and impart advice to undergraduates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) majors.

    Two local news anchors/reporters from ABC affiliate TV3 Winchester visited the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deployment Center to learn about changes in operations and talk with deployees.

    Middle East District participated in a career day event, held Nov. 16, at James Wood High School. Two District team members were among the 37 invited speakers and presenters from both private industry and government organizations.

    Lt. Col. Russell Sears, Middle East District Deputy Commander, served as keynote speaker during John Handley High School’s annual Veterans Day program Nov. 4.
